With only 90 Hp, the Mercedes Benz UniMog is underpowered by today's truck standards. The gearing allows it to act like it has 250 Hp V-8; it uses super low gearing to accomplish mountain goat-like performance in the woods. The UniMog has a 112:1 final drive ratio in low range.
The ground clearance of the UniMog, at 16.5 inches to the differential (most trucks are 8 or 9 inches), is unheard of for a regular 4x4. It can pass over a stump or rock without even touching it, a task that would be a quite a challenge for a normal off-roader.
This UniMog was a Swiss NATO* forces vehicle, until it was put into storage for twelve years. It was shipped to the US in 1999 for Back Road Safari.
